Give Poupie any rhythm and she’ll ride it. That’s what a cosmopolitan vocalist does in decidedly cosmopolitan times, and the singer, who was born in the US and grew up in France, and spent time in Britain, Spain and the Canary Islands off Morocco, is good at it. Rap, pop, reggae, Latin - her ‘Enfant Roi’ debut album is an all-over-the-place romp, yet it comes off as a marvel of focus. Poupie’s outsized personality is able to easily house the variety of styles she addresses, a trick executed with a blend of musical vision and charisma. It isn’t every French pop newcomer who chooses to include a feature by the boisterous Puerto Rican rapper Guaynaa. “Each track on this album reflects my state of mind at one given moment,” she says about her skill at adaptability. Even the recording sessions had a dual vibe; tracks were cut in both Paris and the Côte d'Azur. Poupie’s career has unfolded quickly in the last few years. She’s participated in the Spanish ‘X Factor’ show and the French edition of ‘The Voice,’ trying her hand at songs by artists as far-ranging as Sia to Franki Valli. But she seems most like herself when she’s doing her own material - no question, authority is a key trait. She told interviewers that last year’s EP, ‘FEU’ was all about “independence and emancipation.” The swag that runs through ‘Enfant Roi’ sustains that attitude. “I’m not like the others / No need to say that it’s my fault,” she sings on “Comme Les Autres.” Command intertwines with humor in this music.
